Siliguri, 16th May: Matigara Police achieved a major breakthrough in a burglary case by arresting two accused within four days and recovering most of the stolen gold and silver jewellery.
According to reports, Tapan Roy, a resident of the Shiv Mandir Haler Matha area, had gone with his family to attend a relative’s wedding on May 11. Taking advantage of the empty house, thieves allegedly broke into the residence and targeted the locker, fleeing with nearly 50 grams of gold and silver ornaments. When the family returned, they found the house ransacked and the locker broken open.
A written complaint was lodged at Matigara Police Station on May 13. Acting swiftly, police formed a special team in plain clothes and launched an investigation. CCTV footage from the area was examined, while technical surveillance and intelligence inputs helped police trace the accused.
During raids in the Ramkrishna Jote and Deuniya More areas, police arrested Dipankar Singh (26). Half of the stolen jewellery was recovered from his house. During interrogation, another accused was identified, following which Bidhan Barman (22), a resident of Balason Colony, was also arrested. The remaining jewellery and stolen items were recovered from his possession.
Police sources stated that both accused had earlier been linked to suspicious activities. Investigators are now probing whether a larger gang was involved and whether the accused were connected to other theft incidents across the city.
Both accused were produced before the Siliguri court, while Matigara Police continues further investigation into the case.
