Youth drowns in Jalpaiguri’s Rajbari Dighi, body recovered after overnight search

Jalpaiguri, 05th June: A tragic incident unfolded in Jalpaiguri after the body of a 22-year-old youth, Rana Basak, was recovered from Rajbari Dighi following an overnight search operation. Rana, a resident of Bajrapara, had drowned while swimming in the pond on Wednesday afternoon.

According to local sources, Rana had gone to Rajbari Dighi with some friends for a swim. While in the water, he ventured towards the middle of the pond and suddenly disappeared beneath the surface. His friends immediately tried to find him, but when they failed, they informed the police.

Upon receiving the alert, personnel from Jalpaiguri Kotwali Police Station, the Disaster Management Unit of Jalpaiguri Municipality, and Civil Defense arrived at the scene. Divers were deployed and search operations continued until nightfall without success.

The search resumed early Thursday morning around 6 a.m., and after several hours of effort, Rana’s body was finally recovered. The body has been sent to Jalpaiguri District Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The incident has left the entire locality in deep mourning.
