Siliguri, 14th May: Matigara police arrested a notorious thief known as “Spiderman” along with his associate for allegedly trying to sell stolen items in Siliguri. The accused had reportedly recently come out on bail and was again found involved in criminal activities.
According to police, valuable belongings of a tourist were stolen from a parked vehicle in the Geyzing area of Sikkim and were allegedly being brought to Siliguri for sale. Acting on a tip-off, police detained the two suspects outside a shopping mall in Matigara.
During questioning, police found their statements suspicious and took them into custody. Investigation later revealed that the duo had allegedly stolen a camera bag belonging to a tourist from the Geyzing parking area two days ago. The bag reportedly contained an expensive camera, lenses and a foreign-brand wristwatch.
The arrested accused have been identified as Rakesh Rai alias “Spiderman” (38) and Suraj Rai (29), both residents of Geyzing in Sikkim.
Police sources said “Spiderman” had earlier been arrested in connection with a gold theft case involving nearly Rs 10 lakh and was taken to Sikkim for investigation. After recently securing bail, he allegedly became involved in another theft incident. Both accused were produced before Siliguri court on Wednesday.
