Siliguri, 14th May: Siliguri Metropolitan Police launched a unique awareness campaign to encourage people to wear helmets and follow road safety rules. As part of the initiative, a civic volunteer dressed as ‘Yamraj’ stopped two-wheeler riders without helmets and urged them to follow traffic regulations.
Despite repeated awareness drives and helmet distribution programmes, many people in the city are still seen riding motorcycles and scooters without helmets. Keeping this in mind, NJP Traffic Guard organised a special programme near Bhavesh More.
During the campaign, a civic volunteer dressed as ‘Yamraj’ interacted with riders travelling without helmets and explained the importance of road safety. The volunteer appealed to commuters to wear helmets regularly to avoid fatal accidents.
The programme was organised by NJP Traffic Guard OC S.S. Negi under the leadership of Traffic ACP East Anirban Majumdar. During the campaign, the volunteer portraying ‘Yamraj’ told commuters that life is precious and while he was only a symbolic Yamraj, real danger could appear anytime if traffic rules are ignored.
Traffic ACP Anirban Majumdar said that after directives from the state government, efforts have begun to strictly implement traffic rules across the city. He stated that police are currently focusing on awareness and no fines are being imposed at present, but strict action will be taken against violators in the coming days.
Police believe such innovative campaigns help spread awareness quickly among the public and encourage people to develop the habit of wearing helmets regularly.
