Siliguri, 30th April: Alertness of the Junction Traffic Guard helped foil a suspected trafficking attempt, rescuing an orphan minor girl who was allegedly being lured towards a red-light area. The girl was safely rescued and later sent to a shelter home.
According to reports, the around 15-year-old minor had arrived at Siliguri Junction from an orphanage in Katihar and was on her way to Assam. During this time, suspected agents allegedly targeted her and tried to lure her towards the red-light area in Ward No. 07.
It is reported that a e-rickshaw (toto) driver attempted to mislead the minor by offering to take her to an orphanage, but instead tried to take her along. A local person grew suspicious and immediately informed the Junction Traffic Guard. Acting swiftly, police rescued the girl, while the accused toto driver managed to flee from the spot.
The minor was later handed over to the Darjeeling District Legal Aid Forum. Forum president Amit Sarkar coordinated with the West Bengal Child Protection Commission, and with the assistance of Pradhan Nagar Police Station, ensured that the girl was safely shifted to a shelter home.
According to police official SI Tamang, initial investigation suggests a possible trafficking angle. The minor will be produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) for further procedures.
Police have launched a search for the absconding accused and a detailed investigation into the case is currently underway.
