Siliguri, 11th May: After the formation of the new government in West Bengal, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers and supporters have become vocal against the alleged syndicate system in the state. Locals have alleged that they are being harassed due to syndicate pressure, following which the BJP has started a campaign against such activities across the state.
On Monday, BJP workers reached the taxi stand area near Darjeeling More in Siliguri and initiated a drive against alleged syndicate activities in the area.
It has been alleged that irregularities were taking place in ticket bookings for different destinations through some tour and travel agencies operating in the locality. BJP workers spoke to representatives of the agencies and checked their licences and other necessary documents. The party claimed that several agencies did not possess valid licences or proper documents.
BJP leaders alleged that due to lack of administrative monitoring, such irregularities had been continuing for a long time and asserted that they would put an end to the alleged illegal collection.
Meanwhile, a member of one of the agencies denied all allegations and stated that they were not running any syndicate. The member also termed the allegations of extra money collection as baseless.
Vehicle drivers, however, claimed that around Rs 100 was allegedly being collected from each vehicle through a syndicate-like system. They expressed hope that the practice would stop and provide them relief.
