Siliguri, 10th June: A young man died after his bike fell into a deep pit dug for four-lane road construction in the Matigara area of Siliguri on Tuesday night.
According to local sources, heavy rainfall had filled the construction pit with water. In the night, a bike reportedly lost control and fell into the water-filled pit near Khaprail More, resulting in the rider’s death by drowning.
On Wednesday morning, local residents spotted the incident and immediately informed Matigara Police Station. Following this, the fire department reached the spot and recovered the body. The body was later sent to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH). The bike involved in the accident was also retrieved.
The incident has sparked widespread anger in the area. Locals have alleged that the construction site lacked proper barricading, leading to accidental entry by commuters.
They have blamed negligence by the construction agency for the fatal accident and demanded stricter safety measures at ongoing roadwork sites.
