Siliguri, 27th April: The only rhino at Bengal Safari Park in Siliguri, Bhim, has died, leaving park staff in deep mourning. Officials said the animal died due to age-related health complications.
Bhim had a notable history, having strayed from Baikunthapur forest in Jalpaiguri following a territorial conflict. He was later rescued from the Sevoke area by the forest department and brought to Bengal Safari Park, where he was renamed Bhim. Over time, he became a major attraction for visitors and led to the introduction of a dedicated rhino safari.
The rhino had reportedly made several attempts to break out of its enclosure, and efforts were also made to find a companion for it, but they were unsuccessful. The park authorities have confirmed that a post-mortem was conducted as per protocol, and the report has been sent to higher authorities.
