Siliguri, 06th May: In a major crackdown on narcotics, a joint team of the Special Operations Group (SOG) and Matigara Police busted an illegal drug operation being run from a residence.
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested an accused identified as Mohammad Sufijuddin, a resident of Vishwas Colony. He is accused of running an illegal trade of brown sugar from his house, which had allegedly turned into a drug den.
Police had been monitoring his activities for the past 24 hours before conducting the raid and catching him red-handed. During the search, officials recovered 412 grams of brown sugar along with Rs 5,000 in cash. The seized contraband is estimated to be worth several lakh rupees in the market.
A case has been registered against the accused under the NDPS Act, and he has been produced before the Siliguri court. Police have sought his remand for further interrogation.
Investigations are underway to uncover the larger network involved in the illegal drug trade.
