Siliguri, 20th February: Trinamool Congress-led West Bengal government has withdrawn more than 70 cases that were filed against Gorkha Janmukti Morcha founder president Bimal Gurung in 2017. The state government has started the process of withdrawing the cases filed against him ahead of the assembly polls. The state law department has already given necessary instructions to the district police in this regard.
It is to be noted that in 2017, the state police had filed a case against Bimal Gurung under various sections including spreading violence in the hills and destroying government property. However, the state government has now ordered to withdraw all cases against Gurung. However, murder and treason cases are still pending against Bimal Gurung.
Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader Bimal Gurung, who had been in hiding since 2017, appeared in Kolkata in October 2020, broke ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and announced the alliance with Trinamool Congress for 2021 assembly elections.
