Siliguri, 16th May: The undercover team of Pradhan Nagar Police Station arrested a man in possession of a firearm and ammunition from the Darjeeling More area of Siliguri on Thursday night. The accused has been identified as Shankar Mahato alias Kalu, aged 49.
Acting on a tip-off, police launched a swift operation and apprehended the suspect who was reportedly roaming the area with the weapon. Initial investigations suggest that the accused may have been planning to rob pedestrians during the night using the firearm.
The police have booked him for illegal possession of arms and produced him before the Siliguri court on Friday.
Authorities are now probing how the weapon came into his possession and are trying to identify others who may be involved. The investigation is ongoing.
