Jalpaiguri Court sentences man to death for killing cousin over harassment scolding

Jalpaiguri, 29th March: A man has been sentenced to death for brutally murdering his cousin in public after being scolded for harassing a young woman. The verdict was delivered by the Jalpaiguri court in a case from the Shantinagar area under Bhaktinagar police station.

As per reports, Shankar Das and Suresh Roy, residents of Shantinagar in Rajganj block, were cousins. Suresh had allegedly been harassing a young woman living near Shankar’s house. When the woman’s family complained, Shankar scolded Suresh for his actions.

Later, after the young woman got married, Suresh attacked his elder cousin Shankar in March 2021. He hacked him to death in public, stabbing him 18 times with a sharp weapon to ensure his death.

The case continued in court for four years, with 12 witnesses testifying. After hearing both sides, Additional Third Court Judge Biplob Roy on Saturday pronounced the death sentence, calling the case the ‘rarest of rare.’
