Siliguri, 18th June: Members of the All Bengal E-Rickshaw (Toto) Drivers’ Union staged a protest at Airview More in Siliguri on Thursday, opposing restrictions on e-rickshaw movement on major city roads.
A large number of drivers gathered since morning and took part in a sit-in demonstration, raising concerns over their livelihood and demanding restoration of the earlier route-based system operated through stickers.
The protesters said that sudden restrictions on movement across several roads have created severe financial hardship. Many drivers have taken loans to purchase vehicles and are now struggling to manage household expenses and repay instalments.
The drivers also stated that they submitted a memorandum at the SDO office regarding the issue. They attempted to meet Siliguri MLA and state minister Shankar Ghosh, but could not do so as he was in Kolkata. However, they were assured that the matter would be discussed upon his return.
The delegation also met MLA Shikha Chatterjee, who reportedly assured them that the issue would be addressed through discussions. However, the protesters alleged that no concrete steps have been taken so far.
The drivers cautioned that they would launch a larger agitation if the issue is not resolved soon.
